Local land charges
When buying a property or piece of land, your solicitor will submit a local land charges search. This will show whether there are any legal restrictions affecting the land or property.
You can request and pay for a local land charges search online.

Local land charges service changes
From 1 August 2025 we will no longer provide a local land charges search service.
After this date, our Local Land Charges Register will have migrated to HM Land Registry’s national register. You will be able to access a new digital service through Portal, Business Gateway and on HM Land Registry’s GOV.UK pages.

It is important to remember to only submit the required fee of £118.25 including VAT (residential) and £154.64 including VAT (commercial) when submitting a CON29 enquiry to us after 24 July 2025.

You can carry out a personal search for local land charges but it won't be as comprehensive as what we can do for you. You can find our local land charges register in our mapping portal.
Enquiries of Local Authority - CON29 and CON290
Form Con29 is a questionnaire and contains a series of standard questions covering information from various council departments. It reveals any road proposals or schemes, compulsory purchase orders, enforcement actions, building regulations or planning applications and formal or informal notices.
A Con29 includes:
- development plans
- maintenance of roads
- road schemes
- outstanding notices
- entries in the planning register
- enforcement action
- contaminated land
- building control information including competent persons notifications.
Con29O contains a series of further, optional questions and may be submitted as stand alone or with CON29. It can reveal, for example houses in multiple occupation, noise abatement and hazardous substance consents.
A CON290 includes:
- common land and village greens
- food safety notices
- gas pipelines
- environmental and pollution notices
- additional enquiries - these have an extra cost attached to them.
