Government recycling changes businesses need to know about
Ashfield businesses are being reminded to be prepared for changes to the way they recycle.
The Government is introducing changes to the way businesses separate waste from 31 March 2025.
Simpler Recycling is a key legislative change that aims to create a standardised approach to waste collection in order to make recycling easier and more effective.
This means that all businesses, not just in Ashfield, that have 10 or more employees will be required to separate mixed recyclables and food waste into separate containers.
These changes do not currently apply to small and micro businesses with under 10 employees. However, they will apply from 31 March 2027 and businesses are urged to get ahead of the curve.
From 31 March 2025 businesses with 10 or more staff will need to separate the following materials:
- Glass, metal and plastic
- Cardboard and paper
- Food waste as a dedicated collection
Cllr Helen-Ann Smith, Ashfield District Council’s Executive Lead for Parks and Environmental Services, said:
“These changes are being made across the country, not just Ashfield, and we appreciate it can cause a lot of problems for businesses when times are already difficult.
“The Council is here to help. We can offer advice and support to guide businesses through these changes. Please do get in touch and talk to a member of our team.”
Businesses can get a free waste audit, where the waste management process will be analysed and a tailored solution will be offered to ensure that they remain compliant.
