Brierley Forest arson attack
Ashfield District Council has vehemently condemned an arson attack that has destroyed acres of forest and woodland.
Fire crews and wildlife specialists were called out to Brierley Forest Park, in Sutton-in-Ashfield, Nottinghamshire, during the early hours of Sunday morning (29 June).
Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue said almost four square of woodland - equivalent to about 900 football pitches - of forest, undergrowth and woodland had been damaged in the blaze, and confirmed it has been started deliberately.
Charlie Edwards, Executive Director of Operations at Ashfield District Council, said: "It's heartbreaking that a beautiful area of natural woodland has been destroyed in this way. We utterly condemn the actions of those responsible. It is reprehensible and we urge anyone who knows anything about this fire to contact the police.
"We are proud of our forests and open spaces across Ashfield, they are there to be enjoyed by everyone. We are determined to work with our partners to ensure Brierley forest will rise again."
