Registering to vote means you can vote in local and general elections, as well as in referendum.

The electoral register lists the names and addresses of everyone registered to vote. The electoral register is also used to call people for jury service.

Paying council tax doesn't register you to vote. You can do this online through Gov.UK. Anyone who is 16 or over and is a British citizen or an Irish, EU or Commonwealth citizen resident in the UK can register to vote.

You can contact us if you want to check whether you are already on the electoral register and can vote.

You cannot vote if you are not registered. It is a legal requirement to register to vote if you are asked to do so.

When you move house you will need to register to vote online through the Gov.UK website to update the electoral register with your new details. If you don't do this, you won't be able to vote.

You can register at two addresses, such as students for a term-time and home address. However, you can only vote once in any election. A separate registration for each address will need to be made.

Other types of election

As well as district, parish and Police and Crime Commissioner elections you may also be able to vote in:
