Building control and building regulations

Building regulations are minimum standards for design, construction and alterations to virtually every building.

Building control and regulations approval is the means by which we check that buildings in Ashfield are built to these standards. Our aim is:

  • to protect the health and safety of people who use the building
  • build in the interest of the environment
  • conserve fuel and power
  • ensure that adequate access and facilities for people are provided within certain types of buildings.

Do I need building control or building regulations?

If you want to put up a new building, extend or alter an existing one, provide fittings in a building such as drains or heat-producing appliances, install new windows, new washing and sanitary facilities or hot water storage building regulations will probably apply.
